What is Reflective Professional Supervision?

It is well documented how the power of professional coaching can ignite genuine, lasting change in people's work and behaviour. I have certainly found this in my professional journey both when being coached and while coaching others. Then I found Reflective Professional Supervision! My first exposure to supervision came through a peer supervision group with some fellow coaches, where I experienced its transformative potential firsthand. This led me to complete a Graduate Certificate in Professional Supervision in 2022, eager to offer this invaluable resource to others.

So, you might be wondering, what sets reflective supervision apart from coaching?

Beyond Individual Needs: While coaching focuses on individual needs, reflective supervision expands its scope to include the 'unseen other'—the clients for helping professionals or team members for business leaders. It's about nurturing a holistic approach to professional development.

Companion for the Journey: Don't let the term 'supervisor' mislead you into thinking there's a formal hierarchy. A supervisor is more of a companion on your journey, asking you questions to assist you to reflect on your practice. Ideally, your supervisor is external to your organisation so they can objectively ask questions from a fresh perspective, and you are able to have the freedom to answer without concern of internal politics or judgement.

Now, let's explore why reflective supervision is the game-changer you need:

Build & Sustain your Potential: Reflective Supervision is not just for coaches; it's for educators, allied health professionals, spiritual leaders, community workers & business people too. It enhances effectiveness, prevents burnout, builds resilience, and reduces professional isolation.

Elevate Your Practice: With reflective supervision, you'll gain fresh perspectives, refine your skills, and cultivate renewed confidence in your ability to serve others. It's about creating a safe space for reflection and growth, away from the pressures of internal politics.

CPD Hours: Reflective Supervision sessions can count as Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours for coaches and others in helping professions. These sessions can be used towards the ongoing PD required for registration of professional organisations.
